GLOBAL HEALTH & ELECTIVES

Unique Opportunities

Our program encourages you to follow your passion and expand your horizons. While it takes effort to arrange special electives during your second and third year, it allows you some ability to shape your learning experience before graduating and practicing on your own. Residents have done Global Health Mission electives in Guatemala, Ghana, Nigeria and Malawi. Other elective options include Addiction Medicine, Podiatry, Pulmonary, Nephrology, Dermatology, Infectious Disease, Neurology, Psychiatry, Nutrition, Teaching Kitchen, and New Parent Elective. Covid brought the Global Health experiences to a halt, and we have resumed this exciting learning experience for academic year 2023-2024.

GLOBAL HEALTH ELECTIVE

Guatemala

Dr. Brenda Brischetto on one of the trips to Guatemala. She is our residency’s OB curricular lead. She works tirelessly to expand our linkage with local doctors in Portland and here she is working internationally to help improve OB outcomes. On these trips, we

learn much from each other. Here the Comadronas and Brenda are sharing tips to reduce postpartum hemorrhage and improve maternal outcomes.

Residents often join for this short international Global Health experience. Providence has been going to the same sites in Guatemala for over a decade and the long term relationships strengthen the cross cultural learning.

Seated in the front row in the purple top is Dr. Cindy Talbot, Associate Program Director. She was a faculty leader on this trip, and is one of the founders of our residency. Next to Dr Talbot, in the middle of the front row in a light blue top, is Dr. Evon Anukam, Pharmacist PhD, MPH, BCPS, the Clinical Pharmacist at Providence Milwaukie Hospital and organizing leader of the trip. Her annual home cooked meal to honor our graduating class, is a much appreciated and anticipated event. So thanks, Evon, for sharing your incredible knowledge about medications, infectious disease treatment and your delicious food!

Dr. James Chong, a graduate of our program, is the Clinic Director at Providence Medical Group-Sunset Clinic in Portland, Oregon. He is seated on the far left, front row.

Electives

What do you want to get additional training in?

Electives: You have 30 half days of elective time in R2 year and 46 half days of elective time as an R3. Elective time is spread out over the quarters that contain time (one in R2 and two in R3 year). Elective time can be clustered for an away elective.

During these elective times, you also continue to see your continuity patients in clinic. Work with your advisor well in advance of the rotation, complete the elective request form and get approval. We encourage people to explore additional opportunities for electives.
