I chose family medicine for the breadth of opportunities it offers; I can work one on one with the patient in front of me while also working for systems level change to achieve more equitable healthcare. It affords me the ability to form long lasting longitudinal relationships with my patients and help them navigate the continuum of care. I am particularly interested in integrative medicine and addiction medicine. I chose Providence Milwaukie Family Medicine because of the emphasis they put on caring for all people, from patients to providers.

When I am not in the hospital, I enjoy trying new food, hanging out with friends, rock climbing, hiking, and lounging with my cat Taylor Swift.

Before going to medical school, I did two years of AmeriCorps at community health centers in Washington and Northern California. I gained an appreciation for how social determinants of health affected health outcomes especially among marginalized communities. I came back to Wisconsin for medical school, where I chose to specialize in family medicine as I wanted the opportunity to form long term relationships with patients and to address social determinants of health with patients.

I was drawn to the Providence FMR program. because I felt the faculty and residents were the kind of people that I wanted to be around and would want to hang out with outside of work. I’m happy to be working at a community hospital where it is actually possible to get to know the staff there. I feel that the family medicine residency has a very strong connection with the community it serves.

In my free time I enjoy trail running (especially in the rain or during the golden hour), rock climbing, hiking, ultimate frisbee, and following the NBA.

One of my philosophies is that true wellness is best reached through a comprehensive approach. Within the world of medicine, Family Medicine is most consistent with this philosophy and that’s exactly what attracted me to this specialty. Taking all aspects of a patient’s life in to consideration when working with them to improve their health and wellness is what family physicians excel at. I also found the relationships family physicians can create when they see their patients longitudinally are incredibly meaningful and fulfilling.

When looking for a place to train, I prioritized a place that would teach me all the skills I need to learn but also have a supportive, collaborative and fun environment. The gorgeous mountains, endless trees and nearby ocean don’t hurt either! On my day’s off, you’ll be able to find me trying out new restaurants with my dog, Olive, by my side.

Eastern Virginia Medical School

I grew up in Bellingham, Washington and lived there for most of my life before making the journey out to Norfolk, Virginia for Medical School. Like most people from the Pacific Northwest, I was eager for opportunities to return when I finished medical school. I was drawn to Family Medicine by the opportunity for the life-long connections you can make with your patients and surrounding communities.  I was drawn to Providence Milwaukie FMR for similar reasons. The residents are a close group and have a great relationship with the faculty here. There is an abundance of wellness and support from the program which means so much during the ups and downs of residency.

I am most excited to be in Portland for the endless number of great restaurants and food trucks. The local breweries are a fun place to relax on the weekends. I love playing video games and I’m a big fan of sports (Go Seahawks!).

Tuoro University College of Osteopathic Medicine- California

A native Oregonian from Eugene, months into starting medical school near San Francisco I knew I had to return home following graduation. Initially wanting to be a veterinarian, I attended Oregon State University and moved to Portland where I worked at a veterinary clinic for six years prior to medical school. Family medicine is a natural fit as I enjoy connecting with people and love the idea of longitudinal, lifelong care. I appreciate the diversity of family medicine, caring for newborns to the elderly and all populations in between, and having the ability to practice in both clinical and hospital settings. Additionally, I have an interest in addiction medicine, and family medicine is a great avenue to provide this care.

Outside of the clinic/hospital I enjoy anything outside, music (going to concerts around Portland, record collecting), exploring breweries, wine tasting, photography, and am an avid sports fan (anything Oregon Ducks and the NBA and NFL).

I chose a career in Family Medicine for many reasons. At the core, I pursued Family Medicine to be an integral part of a wide variety of patients, processes, and care modalities. During medical school, I found myself enjoying the time spent forming relationships and investing time into guiding individuals and families towards improved health. I am passionate about preventive health and being proactive in achieving wellness. I am also interested in Sports Medicine, Ultrasound, Wilderness Medicine, and Osteopathic Manipulation.

Outside of medicine I am looking forward to exploring my new home in Oregon by camping, hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding and trying all of the local food options. I am also a former musician and enjoy live music.
