A Message From The Program Director

A Welcome from Our Program Director

Greetings from Portland, Oregon!

Most of us chose our residency for its location and a sense that we’d fit in with the team. Talk with our residents and see for yourself: our residents and faculty are exceptional learners, teachers, and colleagues. If you want excellent training and love the Pacific Northwest, come “Learn, Play and Stay” with us.

  • Most of our graduates practice in Oregon and the Pacific NW. A majority stay with Providence. Many work in FQHC’s.

  • Enjoy hiking, skiing, and cold-water surfing, Powell’s Books (the world’s largest independent bookstore), and inventive chefs cooking with locally grown food.

  • Most practice outpatient family medicine; others are hospitalists, FM obstetrics providers, faculty, or fellowship graduates in Sports Medicine, Obstetrics, Geriatrics, and Addiction Medicine.

  • Even if every family medicine resident in Oregon stayed, the state would still be about 50% short of the providers it needs.

Leadership Transition

After almost eleven years as Program Director at this program and twenty-seven years in various roles at the University of Washington, I will be retiring at the end of March 2027. It has been a great honor to work, teach and learn with such amazing residents and faculty.

I am pleased to share that our residents and faculty unanimously selected Associate Program Director Holly Hofkamp, to serve as our next Program Director, starting March 1, 2027. Holly has been a FM residency faculty since 2009 and served seven years as an Associate Program Director at OHSU before joining Providence. Holly led the program as interim director during my medical leave, and did a stellar job leading our residency leadership team during that time.

She has won numerous teaching awards, including the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Teaching Award.

Jess Burness, Associate Program Director, continues to lead our Curriculum Committee and she looks forward to continue being a key member of our leadership team. We have carefully planned and timed this transition to ensure a smooth handoff and to ensure this residency continue to remain a highly sought after place to train.
